What is Your Genius? Have you ever found that learning some things is much more difficult than learning some others? Isn't it a lot easier when things seem to come naturally? A possible reason for this is that we are born with some innate or natural talent for thinking and making decisions about those problems whose solutions come easily. This natural talent allows us to see some things more clearly than others, hence making some problems less difficult. Most modern research on the subject suggests that our thinking abilities are in part formed by genetics and part by our environmrent when we are very young. As we grow into adulthood, although some further growth and change can occur, it is difficult to make major changes by training and shear effort. Thus in adulthood you are employed doing work which doesn't suit your natural thinking, life can be difficult. Thus the key to success is to have a very good idea of where your natural abilities lay and spend most of your time being productive in those areas.
Conventional Wisdom Conventional wisdom might be to say that one should work on their weaknesses in order to stronger overall. But seven years of research involving top producers in a variety of fields and summarized by Jay Niblick in his book "What's Your Genius?" indicates otherwise. In fact it is apparent from his research that people who are among the most successful in their field spend as much time as possible doing what they do well and shunning what they don't do well. They don't expend a lot of energy trying to develop talents they don't have. Most importantly, they know what their talents are. Now this having been said doesn't imply that one shouldn't or isn't required to work hard to achieve. And it doesn't say that one should stop trying to grow. Rather it simply states that it is best to spend time working with those talents that are nturally good in order to perform best.
